Dine In The Dark (DID) Bangkok Experience Blog

 Hi readers !
Though this was a while ago, thought I would like to share / remember the most unique, sensory, dining experience we have ever tried ..

Dine In The Dark (Bangkok)

We decided to go for this experience as we've never tried this before, and thought it may be really meaningful and special ! For each diner, the hotel will make a donation to the Foundation for the Blind in Thailand.

The DID Restaurant Bangkok is inside the Sheraton Grande Hotel and has direct access from the Asok BTS Skytrain Station.

At the point of our dinner (2016) , the Four-course meals cost 1,400 baht with two seating rounds per night . Its highly recommended to make reservations at least weeks in advance if you're going for weekend meals like us .. We booked via their website and the email replies were very prompt :)

Prior to the dinner, you would have to choose Western, Asian, Vegetarian or Surprise four-course menu before entering the dining room.

That's all the info you'll get for the meal !!! So you won't know at all what you're eating or served, (depend entirely on your tastebuds, smell and touch!!) haha.. so suspense :)

Entering the restaurant ..

BEFORE THE MEAL
Arriving at the pre-dinner lounge ..

This is where you will wait to enter the pitch black dining room , and also have pre-dinner drinks, snacks and also a briefing by the staff, filling up a form on your dietary requirements (eg: lactose intolerance, vegan etc...). There was also live band !

As the room has to be kept 100% pitch dark, your belongings will be needed to keep into the lockers, (no phone, nothing you can bring inside) for safety reasons, the staff will keep your belongings and you will keep the key of the locker...

We were given aprons to wear as the tendency to spill food all over is high !!! Cos we even need to pour our own drinks in the dark hahaha..

Quickly go washroom first... fancy toilets hehe

Before entering the dining room !!

DURING THE MEAL

Every table at Dine in the Dark Bangkok is assigned its own visually-impaired or blind guide, who leads the group through the darkness to their table and is on hand to guide you throughout the whole meal, serving each dish and drink perfectly.

I forgot the name of our guide but he was so super friendly and fun that we gave him an excellent review after the meal !

Being in total darkness is a very scary experience actually. We need to put our hands on the guide shoulders to follow him down the stairs, and to sit at our table.. its really pitch black inside ! NO LIGHT AT ALL !! only hear sounds, feel and smell ...

We were trying very hard to pour the drinks into the glass properly , feeling the cutlery laid out on the table and importantly, guessing what we were eating !!!! HAHAHA ..

After a while, we got quite relaxed and talked a lot to our guide and also some other people sitting beside us lol .. dont know how everyone look like just listen to the voices and talk.. There was no distractions, just really enjoying dining with each other, talking to each other, enjoy the taste of the food, no phones, no external factors, no time rushing.. which I felt was really unique and rare in the current world !

The staff asked us to remember what we thought we ate during the meal and they would show us the pictures after we were done ..

AFTER THE MEAL
We were brought to outside world again and kinda regain our senses .. It took abit of time to get use to the light again , eyes needed to readjust haha..

The staff came and gave us a de-brief, asked us to fill up a feedback form and also showed us the pictures of our food , also explained the ingredients..

End up we guess almost 80% is WRONG !!! LOL ... maybe our tastebuds spoil haha...
(Btw, I had the Asian menu while Hun had the Western menu)

Took some pictures of the food we ate, is atas food actually, all the courses was very nice !!! and gourmet !!
Just that maybe our tastebuds weren't strong enough to identify the food just based on taste and smell haha..

Overall a FANTASTIC dining experience and we'll definitely recommend to try .. really unique and fun dining experience that we won't forget ! ^^
